Types of EV Charging Stations
Level 1 Charging Stations
A level 1 charger uses a common 120-volt household outlet. Every plug-in hybrid or electric vehicle can be charged on Level 1 by plugging the charging equipment into a regular wall outlet.
A level 1 is the slowest way to charge an EV though. It only adds around 7-9 kms of range for every hour of charging, and that number could be substantially lower in cold temperatures. It generally takes between 20 to 60+ hours to fully charge a battery EV. This depends on State of Charge(SOC) of vehicle, battery temperature & vehicles charging limitation.
Charging your battery EV on a level 1 charger is generally too slow if you use your vehicle regularly.
Level 2 Charging Stations
A level 2 charger uses a 240-volt circuit like the ones used by ovens and clothes dryers. A 240-volt outlet has to be installed unless there is already an existing one nearby. Either Plug-in 240V type Chargers or Hardwired.
Level 2 Chargers range in power from 12A to 80A (2.8kW - 19.2kW)
Level 2 chargers are most commonly used for daily EV charging and adds around 20-100km+ of range for every hour of charging. The charging time generally between 4 to 50+ hours to fully charge a battery EV. This depends on State of Charge(SOC) of vehicle, battery temperature & vehicles charging limitation.
Power Sharing for multiple chargers connected on the same circuit can assist with homes or commercial locations that need to charge more than one vehicle at the same time. Chargers communicate with each other to balance the load not to exceed circuit limits.
Level 2 chargers are the most popular choice for Home EV chargers as well Public Destination EV chargers.
Level 3 Charging Stations
A level 3 charger uses a DC (direct current) connection to an electrical system to charge electric vehicles very fast. They require a 3 Phase electrical connection, typically a 480V or 600V service.
They can add up to 325+ kms of range in 15 minutes of charging, depending on EV type. This depends on State of Charge(SOC) of vehicle, battery temperature & vehicles charging limitation
Charger Sizes vary from 25kW to 450kW and beyond. CCS1 connection is typical for most North American EV, except for Teslas, which use their own proprietary connection. Teslas can use CCS1 with an adapter.
Level 3 Charging Stations are used mostly for businesses and commercial locations, especially since they need a large power connection which most homes don't have.
